Paul studied at the State University of New York at Oswego where he majored in Fine Arts and at Pratt Graphics in New York City where he studied with Anna Wong, and with Elaine de Kooning as part of the Empire State College “Studio Without Walls” program. Paul also studied watercolor media with Diana Kurtz at The Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado. He exhibited in California in the seventies and taught printmaking as artist-in-residence at The Venture Gallery in San Diego. Paul’s move to Nova Scotia in 1989 coincided with a renewed and reinvigorated connection to painting. Paul is represented in numerous public, private and corporate collections and he continues to live and work in Halifax.
Paul works in the medium of oil on canvas and the prints in his collection are from his original oil paintings. Paul says about his work "Through painting, I attempt to create a portrait revealing the landscape and coastlines of the Maritimes, but one that is not simply objectively realist. I infuse my work with my unique interpretation of light, color and composition".
"All of my paintings are connected through a common concern for the depiction of light. I respond to low-angled, northern light with long and deep shadows. The effect of light informs all of my painting practice whether the subject is a corner store at night or a view along the shore of the Atlantic coast. In a sense, light itself is my subject matter.”
